About Our Mineral Makeup Ingredients
Our mineral makeup formulas were founded through vigorous research and experimentation. Each ingredient used in our products is safe, pure and approved by the FDA for use in cosmetics. We believe in using the most natural ingredient available that will safely produce the desired result.
Our mineral cosmetic products are formulated WITHOUT:
talc
bismuth oxychloride
nano-particles
phthalates
perfumes
Below is a list of the main ingredients we use in our makeup minerals. We have numerous lip and mineral eye shadow shades. The pigments used to produce these shades vary tremendously. Please refer to each products details to review their individual ingredients.
❖Allantoin: an anti-irritant and anti-inflammatory ingredient. It is commonly used in creams, for topical application, in acne medicines, anti-aging products, sun care, and many cosmetic treatments. Its healing properties also make it suitable for treating minor wounds and skin irritations. It is used in our Valley Girl mineral foundation.
❖Boron Nitride: A natural, inert mineral. A useful additive to foundations, concealers, eye shadows, lipsticks, skin creams, and face and body powders. Our Boron Nitride is a soft, silky white mineral powder. Commonly used as an additive to improve the slip of a product (how smoothly the product applies) as well as adhesion (how long it stays on the skin). Boron Nitride is the primary ingredient in our NoHoGlo mineral foundation, and a high percentage of our Hollywood foundation as well. Boron Nitride costs about 8-10 times more than the other minerals. That's why you won't see much, if any of it, in most other mineral makeup companies products.
❖Calcium Carbonate: Calcium Carbonate is found in chalk, limestone, marble and travertine. Even eggshells are 95% calcium carbonate! It is highly absorbent, and used widely in the cosmetic field. It is an ingredient in our Oil Control Powder.
❖Dimethicone: A silicone oil. Derived from Silica (defined below). Dimethicone is used widely in Beauty Care Products for its superior spreadability and is an excellent emollient. It is added as a binding agent in our products. A binder helps reduce fly away dust, making the product not only feel better, but also safer. Also reduces waste of the product during application.
❖Iron Oxides: Mineral pigments that are widely used in the cosmetic field. They are considered to be non-toxic, moisture resistant, and non-bleeding. Iron oxides graded safe for cosmetic use are produced synthetically in order to avoid the inclusion of ferrous or ferric oxides, and impurities normally found in natural occurring iron oxides.
❖Jojoba: Unlike common vegetable oils, jojoba oil is chemically very similar to human sebum. It is one of the most non-comedogenic oils available. An excellent moisturizer and skin soother. It is used in our Valley Girl mineral foundation.
❖Kaolin: This pure, white, natural clay offers adhesion to our mineral makeup cosmetic products. With natural absorbency properties, it is fantastic for oily skin care! Also known as China Clay because it has been used for thousands of years by Chinese women as a cosmetic powder. It is used in our Oil Control Powder.
Note: Our Kaolin does not come from China. The U.S.A. has numerous Kaolin mines.
❖Magnesium Myristate: Magnesium is an Earth Mineral that has strong absorbent properties and some disinfecting properties. Myristate is a fatty acid typically found in plants. Fatty acids can help supplement the skin's intercellular matrix. Magnesium Myristate contributes the following noticeable aspects to cosmetics: adhesion, free flow, slip, soft feel, rub resistance, lubricity, surface smoothness, and water repellency. Magnesium Myristate is used to treat our Premium grade Sericite Mica in our Mineral Makeup formulations.
❖Magnesium Stearate: A very light weight mineral that promotes adhesion without "bulking up" your finished product. It's great for helping to control shine throughout the day. This ingredient is found in our Hollywood mineral foundation, Hide It corrective concealers, mineral blush, mineral eye shadows, and some of our mineral bronzers.
❖Sericite Mica: A fine powdered Mica. Sericite is a common key ingredient that is often used in significant amounts in mineral makeup formulas and other decorative cosmetics as a talc replacement. It is often used as a primary ingredient because of it's silky-smooth texture. We use Premium Sericite treated with Magnesium Myristate, a top grade, superior mineral that:
* Imparts a subtle luster and some transparency.
* Increases adhesion
* Helps your color remain true throughout the day.
* Repels water.
Most companies use untreated sericite, which has a gray hue to it, and can leave you with an unhealthy, ashen look after your makeup sets. Untreated is less expensive. We have opted for treated. Higher quality at a higher expense.
❖Silica: Silica is a mineral found all over the planet -- in sandstone, clay, granite, even in plants and animals! Silica is another ingredient with a cost of 8-10 times that of other basic mineral makeup ingredients. Uncommon in other cosmetic lines. It is found in our Hollywood mineral foundations and Mineral Veil.
It has many useful qualities:
* Because of their spherical shape our silicas scatter light and blur the look of fine lines and wrinkles.
* An oil absorbent
* It improves slip (how the product feels going on)
❖Silk Powder: Our Superfine Silk Powder is 100% natural silk protein powder that preserves the natural composition and physical structure of cocoon silk. The superfine powder is useful in mineral makeup formulations to soften fine lines, provide moisture balance, absorb excess oil and provide a silky slip. It is an ancient aid to dry skin and so much more. It is a very fine, silky white powder with no taste or smell.
* Adds a sheen to your makeup products as the light is reflected
* Contains 18 amino acids which are easily absorbed into the skin
* Both reflects and absorbs UV rays
* Is a natural moisture-adjusting product which can absorb or release moisture as the temperature and humidity change.
* Lets your skin breathe.
❖Titanium dioxide: Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) is an inorganic oxide occurring in nature, brilliant white in color with many times the covering power of zinc oxide. Titanium dioxide is used in many Beauty Care products as a thickening, whitening, lubricating, and sunscreen ingredient.
Titanium dioxide is a UV light absorber and protects skin from both UVA and UVB radiation. It is considered to have no risk of skin irritation (References: www.photodermatology.com/sunprotection.htm; and Skin Therapy Letter, 1997, volume 2, number 5).

❖Ultramarines: Natural pigments used widely in the cosmetic field. They are graded safe for cosmetic use, but not for lips. Used primarily in foundations, eye color, nail colors, and lotions.
❖Zinc Oxide: A natural mineral that helps with adhesion. Also offers sun protection.
